During the past few days, I undertook a large project. I attempted to make a single coil pickup both from a kit and the wire from Stew-Mac. I spent a lot of time making a jig and trying to set it up according to the instructions. At first, I tried winding with two different electric motors, but they couldn't go slow enough, so the wire kept breaking. Each time the wire broke, it had to be soldered back together. My jig had several eyelets and guides. I ended up making a hand-cranked mandrel to spin the bobbin. This worked better, but still broke the wire. The final product looked and sounded excellent; if I do that again, though, I'll have to find some other way to spin the bobbins that does not break the wire.
